It is common knowledge that some types of physical exercises, especially adrenaline-packed adventure sports, can cause injuries or even fatalities.Despite legitimate concerns about these activities,it is not so certain whether outright prohibition is the best solution.

Some people support a ban on all accident-prone sports and I can understand their point of view.Parents probably welcome this policy, because of the priority placed on the safety of their children. These young, unskilled learners are often at risk of sprains and fractures, even though they only attempt risky moves, such as tackling an opponent, under the watch of experienced professionals.Similarly, rescue workers would support stringent control of access to dangerous activities.Routinely dispatched to remote locations to find and transport injured mountaineers and rock climbers, they understand how fatigue and insufficient warmup, besides unpredictable factors, can result in injuries for professionals and amateurs alike.

Others who say that participation in risky activities is a matter of personal choice and should therefore be free of micromanagement by the authorities.Teenagers, drawn to the idea of testing their physical limits and the associated peer recognition, are keen to try stunning maneuvers. They would argue that the freedom to perform parkour moves and freestyle bike tricks, despite the risks involved, should not be limited by the authorities.Experienced extreme sports enthusiasts, too, believe that they are entitled to judgement calls about their own activities. They typically hold relevant competency certificates and training records,so they can find risk-averse policies unreasonable and arbitrary.

I think the question depends on the type of actions involved and the resources available. As far as contact sports are concerned, training and competitions usually take place in purpose-built venues that feature necessary technical and medical support,so there is no need to ban these activities. On the other hand, sporting events heavily reliant on the physical environment, especially those in hard-to-reach locations, may be substantially more dangerous. This is why cave diving and other forms of adventure should be disallowed until a site has been thoroughly studied and equipped with necessary facilities.

In general, despite the often-cited injuries and even fatalities,it is not reasonable to impose an across-the-board prohibition against dangerous sports.Enthusiasts can be given the freedom to participate in their favourite form of exercise as long as a reasonable level of safety can be ensured.
